What is Mindfulness of Breath?

In mindfulness practice, we are always bringing our attention to our breath. In this practice of returning to the present moment, the breath is a helpful anchor, because it is always here. It is already here.

We don’t have to do anything special with our breath. We don’t have to do anything special to our breath. All we have to do is notice it. Watch the breath and notice how it feels.

Then we make space for the breath. Our body already knows how to breathe. The breath has it own wisdom and compassion. It has kept us alive all these years! So with an attitude of humility, curiosity, and gratitude, we make space for the breath. Making space for the breath to unfold naturally and fully. Making space for the breath to unfold spontaneously and completely. Interestingly, when we make space for the breath, we also make space for ourselves. We also make space for our lives, for the experiences in our lives, and the people in our lives.

Then, we can allow the breath to do what it already knows how to do: Inhaling, taking it all in, taking in what we need. Exhaling, letting it all go, releasing what we no longer need. We can allow the breath to unfold and to connect with that process. Breathing in, taking it all in, without judgment. Breathing out, letting it all go, without reservation.

That is already mindfulness practice: Welcome everything, grasp nothing.
